What is WordPress?

What is WordPress?

The IT Guy’s answer: “WordPress is a website builder.”

Uuhhmmm … OK … Me and you … thinking: Yeah, I will need to know a bit more!

If you Google ‘website builder’ and check out Wikipedia’s definition, this is the answer:  “Website builders are tools that allow the construction of websites without manual code editing.”

This naturally leads to the next question … what is coding … some more Google-ing will give you many results, our favourite – “Coding is basically the computer language used to develop apps, websites and software. Without it, we’d have none of the major technology we’ve come to rely on such as Facebook, our smartphones, the browser we choose to view our favorite blogs or even the blogs themselves. It all runs on code”.

You want a website, but don’t know how to code … millions of people are battling with the same issue!  Hence, tech developers came up with the idea to create platforms to be used by non-coders to build websites, so just about everyone can now create their own unique web or blog site!

.org vs .com – WordPress

WordPress.org and WordPress.com are not the same, and here is how they fit together:

  • org is the WordPress software which is FREE for you to install on your own web host, and you can then create a 100% owned website! You do as you please!
  • com is a PAID for service, powered by WordPress.org. It is easy to use but you don’t have the same freedom as with WordPress.org.

Which To Choose …

If you want your own website, with total flexibility, WordPress.org is the way to go!

There are three simple steps:

Make sure the host you choose meets all the WordPress.org requirements!

Brief WordPress History

Online Publishing Platform

The need for a personal publishing platform that is appealing was the start of WordPress.  It is built on PHP (Personal Home Page) now referred to as Hypertext Pre-Processor, which is a computer or IT programming language (coding).  However, WordPress also use HTML, CSS and some Javascript.

Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little are the co-founders and programming started out as b2/cafelog which is a simple, unmaintained fancy news/weblog tool.  The first WordPress version was released in 2003. Beta testing started in August 2005, the platform was opened to the public in November 2005 and initially it was offered as a ‘by invitation only’ service!  In September 2010 Microsoft partnered with WordPress.com for blogging services.

Market Share

Currently, WordPress owns the largest website builder market share, globally! This project took Millions of Dollars to fund and Hundreds of Thousands of man hours went into writing the code.
